The Goal of This Research:
It has become more and more crucial to have a powerful ASIC (Application Specific IC) or ASIP (Application Specific Instruction-set Processors) prototyping tool that helps the embedded system designers to meet today's time-to-market needs, which is one of the important factor in developing such embedded systems. In this work, we try to develop such a prototyping tool that is specifically designed for the development of ASICs or ASIPs for DSP applications. For this work, the research is pursued in four directions, as shown below.

  • Developing an architecture description language

    • The expression power capable of describing a State-of-the-art DSP architecture
      - Support for Instruction set / Pipeline structure / RT-level module

    • GUI-based architecture description environments

    • Architectural module database engine


  • Developing a retargetable simulator

    • 10K+ instructions / sec (instruction set simulator)

    • Support for visual debugging environment


  • Developing a retargetable compiler

    • Code size that doesn't exceed two times of hand-coded assembly

    • Execution speed comparable with state-of-art compiler


  • Developing an efficient design space exploration tool

    • Efficient exploration methodology of architecture to satisfy a given requirement
